Bouzouki & Mandola

Bouzouki & Mandola

The original Greek Bouzouki was a 3 course/6 string instrument. Then around the 1950’s a 4course/8 string version was developed and in the 1960’s introduced into Irish traditional music. Acoustic or electric with its longer scale length to the mandola, generally tuned to GDAE or GDAD.
The octave Mandola, tuned an octave below mandolin, has no orchestral equivalent. The 4 double courses fo metal strings usually tuned in unison in 5ths to GDAE. The neck is shorter than a bouzouki, may be easier to finger but strings are heavier.
